If you are a certified Scrum Master in the hunt for a job, you may have been asked one or more of the following questions:
- What is the difference between Team Capacity and Velocity
- How do you measure a team’s capacity?
- How do you use team capacity and velocity during Sprint Planning.
If you can answer these questions, you are on the right track. My question is, can you answer these questions while using a specific model?
Did you know that different teams use different models for defining that capacity, because a lot is relative and particular to the team?
Being specific always helps and is even more critical if you are considering higher level positions like Senior Scrum Master and Agile Coach.
This template takes into consideration a few important factors needed to calculate an individual’s (and Team’s) capacity. They are:
- Days off. This is a common and obvious consideration. Planned time off, or leave must be considered.
- Availability: Just because a team member is at work does not mean that they are available to the team. What if they are part of multiple teams? How do you factor that in?
3: Efficiency: A team member could be fully available but not as competent as one who is 50% available? Do you agree? If so, you must consider efficiency.
